Year 6

Welcome to Year 6

Ms Morton - Moonstone Class hmorton@gordon.greenwich.sch.uk

Miss White - Sunstone Class: swhite@gordon.greenwich.sch.uk

Learning at Gordon Primary School is broad with a wide range of engaging experiences that reinforce key concepts in every subject. It is balanced so that children receive a full and rich curriculum containing all subjects, and implemented well so that children remember in the long term the information and skills they have been taught. We place priority on the children’s personal, social and emotional development because we know this is key to a successful school career and life in general. Our curriculum is designed to engage and meet the needs of all children and enables them to achieve success in all subjects.

Autumn Term 2025 Learning

This term we will be working on the following topics:

English

Our focus texts this term will be When the Sky Falls by Phil Earle and Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz. We will be writing balanced arguments, writing in the style of the author, summarising and using the text as evidence. We will be putting ourselves in the shoes of different characters from the text to understand characters’ behaviour and writing from the character’s perspective. We will be beginning to develop our writing in various ways by editing, peer assessing and improving using the Year 6 criteria. We will also continue to revisit and incorporate new grammar into our English lessons.

Maths

We will be using the Maths No Problem scheme to support our mathematical learning. This term we will be completing units on Place Value, the Four Operations and Fractions and Decimals. We will be refining their knowledge of place value and working with numbers between 1 000 000 and 10 000 000. We will explore the four operations in combination and in isolation. We will be simplifying, comparing and ordering, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions and decimals.

Science

We will be studying two science topics this term, Animals including Humans and Light.

In Animals including Humans the children will build on their knowledge and understanding of different systems within the body. They will research the parts and functions of the circulatory system. They will focus on how nutrients are transported around the human body.

In Light, we will recognise that light travels in straight lines, how light travels to the eye and allows us to see and understand how shadows are formed. We will be investigating relationships between light sources.

History

This term we will be looking at World War II and learning about information collected in the national Census.

The children will extend their chronological knowledge beyond 1066 and learn how World War II changed British society. They will learn about the different reasons why Britain went to war in 1939 and investigate the experiences of families during the Blitz. Using a range of sources, the children will reconstruct the feelings of those living on the home front in World War II and consider how migrants helped the war effort. Following this, we will be using the Census to look at how the area of Eltham where the school is located turned from a rural farming landscape to the suburban development we are all familiar with.

Art

This term we will be exploring art with a message. The children will look at the famous ‘Guernica’ by Picasso and the works of Käthe Kollwitz and, through the mediums of graffiti, drawing, painting and sculpture, they will create their own artworks that speak to the viewer.

Music

In music this term, Year 6 will be focusing on harmony singing and preparing for Young Voices and Christmas performances. They will be using musical notation to look at harmony and dynamics before moving onto using Garageband on ipads to create group compositions.

Computing

This half term, the children will develop their knowledge and understanding of using a computer to produce 3D models. After half term break, they will be taught the importance of formatting data to support calculations, while also being introduced to formulas and will begin to understand how they can be used to produce calculated data in spreadsheets.

Design Technology (DT)

The children will work on Structures: Playground equipment. The children will be challenged to design and create a model of a new playground featuring five apparatus, made from three different structures. They will practise visualising objects in plan view and also get creative with their use of natural features and cladding for their structures.

Physical Education (PE)

The children will be learning the skills involved in Basketball, Cricket and Rugby.

French

We will be conjugating the verb ‘aller’- to go, identifying correct prepositions, learning sports vocabulary and how to express preferences. The children will develop and practise language learning strategies, develop reading, speaking and listening skills and respond to questions about sports.

Religious Education (RE)

We begin our learning by exploring the concepts of hurt and healing and how people cope when faced with difficult situations. We will then examine the difference between religious and non-religious worldviews. Specially focusing on the origins of humanism and the influential thinkers who were at the forefront of the humanist worldview.

Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE) / Relationships & Sex Education (RSE)

In Families and friendships, we will be learning what it means to be attracted to someone and different kinds of loving relationships; what marriage and civil partnerships are, and that people have the right to choose whom they marry or whether to get married.

In Safe relationships, we will be recognising and managing pressure and the concept of consent in different situations. We will be comparing the features of a healthy and unhealthy friendship, looking at strategies to respond to pressure from friends including cyberbullying.

In Respecting ourselves and others, we will be learning about expressing opinions and respecting other points of view, including discussing topical issues.
